Could 2026 Be the Most Important Election of Your Lifetime?

2026 midterm elections
  • A Democratic victory in 2026 could accelerate the adoption of socialist policies, as 65% of Democrats view socialism favorably.
  • Proposals such as expanded free education, Medicare for all, and more public housing are expensive and will need to be funded somehow.
  • Don’t assume that a Democratic Congress will keep its hands off your 401(k) accounts.

Midterm elections don’t often get a lot of attention. Voter turnout is often low, as it’s hard to get voters to the polls when the White House isn’t on the line.

Despite that, the upcoming 2026 midterms are getting a fair amount of attention, and not necessarily for the right reasons. Many polls are predicting a blue wave, with Democrats taking control of the House and possibly even the Senate.

That in and of itself wouldn’t be unusual, as it has happened many times recently. Democrats took control of Congress under President Bush after the 2006 elections, Republicans took control of the House after the 2010 elections under President Obama, Democrats took control of the House during the first Trump term after the 2018 elections, and Republicans took control of the House after the 2022 elections under President Biden.

But this year the stakes could be particularly high. That’s because the Democratic Party is moving increasingly toward the left.

Democrats have always had their share of bad policies, but more and more Democrats are showing themselves favorable to socialism. Could the 2026 elections be the tipping point that sends this country down the road towards socialism?

Democrats: Are They All Socialists?

Democrats have long been derided as liberals, leftists, and communists. But in many cases those terms were used pejoratively without any real thought given to what those terms mean.

Today, however, Democrats are more willing to describe themselves as socialists, and the numbers are, quite frankly, staggering.

In recent polls, 65% of all Democrats view socialism in a favorable light. And what’s perhaps even more scary, 84% of Gen Z Democrats hold favorable views of socialism.

Now, you may think that these young people won’t vote, and that they’re just typical young people who start off on the left and will eventually move to the right once they start working, paying taxes, having children, etc. But younger generations are growing up in an era in which everything is more expensive than it was for previous generations.

Education costs are through the roof, house prices have been elevated for years, and wages have failed to keep pace with the rising cost of living. An increasing number of young people feel that they’re never going to succeed in life, that they’ll never achieve the same standard of living their parents did, and the only solution they see is socialism.

Sure, you can chide them for thinking that way, but that doesn’t change the reality of their financial situation. And while the case for socialism may not make sense, people who think and act emotionally may not accept the logical arguments in favor of capitalism versus socialism.

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) aren’t doing anything that previous generations of politicians haven’t done. They promise that if you support them and their platform, that life will be better.

Their platform of Medicare for All, free education, and more public housing aren’t that much different from the kids in elementary school who promised free chocolate milk and unlimited recess if you voted for them for school president. Young people who support the DSA platform aren’t thinking about who will pay for all those programs the DSA wants.

Besides, if the government has gone into $40 trillion of debt to fund wars around the globe and Social Security for Boomers, what’s a few trillion more to fund free healthcare, child care, and education? Sounds reasonable, right?

But the questions you need to ask yourself is, who is going to pay for all of that?

DSA is highly motivated and ready to hit the ground running. They have effective political organization and as we’ve seen from the many races in which DSA and DSA-supported candidates have won, they have effectively used the Democratic Party structure, so that the Democratic Party is increasingly becoming the means of implementing the DSA agenda.

If Democrats take the House and Senate in this election, it could be the first step towards increasing socialism in this country. And if this midterm election is a preview of what happens in 2028, we could be only a few years from a tipping point into socialism.

Who Pays For Socialist Policies?

Again, who pays for DSA’s agenda once they come to power?

You might be the one to pay, especially if you have any sizable amount of retirement savings.

Gen Z’s attitudes towards retirement are pessimistic, with many young people believing that they won’t be financially able to retire. And remember that the median amount of retirement savings in this country is less than $1,000.

That’s median, not mean, and it’s that low because so many Americans have nothing saved for retirement. But even among Americans who have retirement savings, the median amount of retirement savings is only $40,000.

That means that if you have $50,000 or $100,000 or more in retirement savings, you’re doing far better than the majority of Americans. And to those who have nothing saved up, that might make you one of the “rich” people who should have to pay for everything.

You may have thought that saving up for retirement was the financially responsible thing to do. But now those retirement savings could put a target on your back, and you may find that your wealth may eventually be at risk of being used to fund DSA’s agenda.

Do Americans Really Want Socialism?

While 65% of Democrats may view socialism favorably, overall the majority of Americans don’t favor socialism. Another recent poll found that a majority of Americans don’t want to live in areas where DSA is making footholds.

But will that have any impact on the upcoming elections?

If you don’t understand what the consequences of socialism are, or you don’t think that socialist policies will impact you, it’s easy to say that you view socialism favorably, because you don’t really think that it will impact you.

What we may find out after the upcoming election is to what extent voters really support socialist candidates and policies, and whether they’re ready to put their money where their mouths are.

If Democrats do take control of Congress, however, don’t be surprised to see them start pushing for policies that reward their base, such as:

  • Medicare for all
  • Free education
  • More public housing

And how could they pay for all of that, with a federal government that already runs $2 trillion annual budget deficits and has a national debt over $40 trillion?

Well, Americans hold over $10 trillion in 401(k) accounts today, and those could be a nice fat target.

Discussion of eliminating 401(k) plans isn’t anything new for Democrats, as they have long discussed shakeups to the American retirement system. But with populist “tax the rich” anger behind them, even proposals for outright seizure of 401(k) assets could have more energy behind them today than they might have had previously.

That’s why it’s so important to start thinking about how you could help protect your hard-earned savings against the class warfare that could break out if Democrats come back to power.

Do you have a plan to help safeguard your wealth? Or do you just trust that things are going to keep going on in the future as they are right now?

“It could never happen here” is probably the default thinking for most people around the world. But in places like Weimar Germany, 1990s Yugoslavia, or modern day Zimbabwe and Venezuela, “it” did happen.

Do Americans understand what caused those crises, and will they learn the lessons they need to in order to help protect themselves and their wealth?

Help Protect Your Wealth With Gold

One way Americans today are helping to safeguard their retirement savings is through ownership of gold.

Now, you may be asking yourself, how can I own gold in my 401(k)?

Well, the short answer is that you can’t. But with a 401(k) to gold IRA rollover you can move a portion of your retirement savings tax-free into a gold IRA, which allows you to own physical gold coins or gold bars within a tax-advantaged retirement account.

Gold IRAs are subject to all the same rules and regulations as other IRA accounts, but they have an additional advantage besides just their ability to own physical gold. When you choose to take a distribution from a gold IRA, you can take that distribution either in cash or in physical gold.

That means that you’re not required to liquidate your gold holdings when you take a distribution. You would obviously have to pay taxes on that distribution, but you then have the ability to take physical possession of the gold coins that were in your IRA and can continue to hold them until you decide to sell them.

Gold has served as a safe haven asset for centuries, and people throughout history have relied on gold to help protect their wealth through political and economic crises.

In fact, during the 2008 financial crisis, gold gained nearly 25% during the same period stock markets fell by more than 50%.

Gold also has a history of performing well during times of high inflation. Over the course of the 1970s, gold’s average annualized gains were over 30% per year, far outpacing inflation that peaked at over 13%.

Why Buy Gold to Diversify Your Savings

Paper money can lose value quickly when inflation rises and government debt grows. Since 1971, the US dollar has lost 88% of its purchasing power, while the gold price has climbed over 10,000%.

If Democrats take control of Congress, how high do you think inflation might climb, and how much more purchasing power do you think the dollar might lose?

Many people choose to buy gold because physical gold cannot go bankrupt like a company, and it can’t be inflated out of thin air like paper money. Adding physical precious metals to your asset holdings can help diversify your portfolio and help protect your hard-earned wealth against financial uncertainty.
